The 2020 Zarague Alvarinho from Vinho Verde, Portugal, is a perfect entry point into the fresh, vibrant white wines of the region.

Vinho Verde, located in the cool, rainy northwest of Portugal, is known for its fertile granite soils and challenging ripening conditions, which produce crisp, green wines.Zarague is a relatively new project spearheaded by Sara Garrido Ramos, who honed her winemaking skills in Australia before returning home to start Zarague. Plantings began in 2013, with the first Alvarinho (aka. ‘Albarino’) released in 2017.

The nose is extremely floral and fruity, while the palate is fresh and nicely balanced with hints of honeysuckle, grapefruit, and a core of citrusy acidity. It’s delicate and vibrant and just a really easy-going drink.

A great match with seafood or light salads, and a terrific value introduction to the unique white wines of Northern Portugal.
