Tempier’s reputation does not depend on Rose alone. Though their first wines bottled were indeed Rose (90% of Provence is Rose!), their Cuvee Classique red blend is belter of a big red.

Though the blend varies according to vintage, Mourvedre is always dominant, with small amounts of Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault included. The 2018 release is savoury, herby and meaty, with bulging dark fruit.

The wine spends 18 months in large old foudres, and is then released another year later. More time in the bottle is probably best, though lovers of hefty, savoury reds should not hesitate.
