Nestled in the heart of Arbois, Domaine Ratte is a small but passionate venture run by Michel-Henri and Franoise Ratte. Their vineyards, in Franoise’s family for generations, have finally been freed from contract farming since 2015, allowing them to showcase the unique terroirs of Arbois.

One such gem is their 2022 Grand Curoulet Chardonnay, sourced from an 80-year-old vineyard with biodynamic and Demeter certification. Grand Curoulets terroir is distinctive, featuring fossil-rich clay soils from the Jurassic period that give the Chardonnay its unique character.

With zero additives and wild yeast fermentation in old Meursault barrels, the Rattes have crafted a Chardonnay that is both expressive and pure. This wine opens with smoky, briny aromas, evolving to reveal fresh-cut grass and orchard fruit notes as it breathes. The palate is juicy and vibrant, driven by lip-smacking acidity that carries through to a long, satisfying finish.

“Lots of flavour, soft and textural, bright acidity underlying but for sure some puppy fat here despite the saline elements. The sea spray perfume and alpine herb elements is so beautiful. Quite light and pretty in a way, ginger, apple, lime, touches of brioche here too. Supple and flowing and just so damn delightful. Elegant in its way.”
